Review

In the year 1989, Australian director Chris Thomson, adapted Criena Rohan’s novel “The Delinquents” into a film that focused on teenagers who fell in love while living in poverty. The film starred Kylie Minogue and Charlie Schlatter and was set in the late 1950s.

The story of “The Delinquents” revolved around Lola Lovell (Kylie Minogue) and Brownie Hanson (Charlie Schlatter), two teenagers who find themselves attracted to each other despite their different backgrounds. Lola came from a dysfunctional family, with an alcoholic mother and an abusive stepfather, while Brownie came from a stable home with parents who were struggling to make ends meet.

Their relationship was further complicated by societal expectations of the time. In the 1950s, it was considered inappropriate for teenagers from different social classes to be involved romantically. This added another layer of drama to an already tense storyline.

“The Delinquents” received mixed reviews at the time of its release. Critics praised Minogue’s performance but criticized the shallow storyline. However, over time, the film has gained a cult following due to its portrayal of teenage love in difficult circumstances.

Kylie Minogue’s portrayal of Lola Lovell remains one of her most celebrated performances. The singer and actress had just risen to fame as a pop star when she was cast in the film, but her acting skills proved her versatility as an artist.

Director Chris Thomson’s decision to adapt “The Delinquents” proved wise as it became one of Australia’s highest-grossing films that year. It resonated with audiences worldwide because they related to Lola and Brownie’s struggles.

Apart from Kylie Minogue and Charlie Schlatter, there were other notable actors who appeared in the film like Bruno Lawrence as liquor smuggler Harvey; Angela Punch McGregor played Brownie’s mother; Michael Caton played Lola’s disreputable stepfather, and Noah Taylor played Lola’s best friend.

“The Delinquents” was filmed on location in Queensland, Australia, and was shot over seven weeks. The cinematography of the film was visually stunning with a mix of picturesque landscapes, busy city streets, and gritty alleyways. It effectively depicted the lives of young people during the time when the story was set.

The film’s soundtrack featured songs from the 1950s that added to its nostalgic feel. Kylie Minogue recorded two songs for the soundtrack, “Blue Darling” and “Locomotion,” which went on to become chart-toppers in Australia.

“The Delinquents” received two Australian Film Institute Awards nominations but did not win either. In retrospect, however, it remains an important film in Australia’s cinematic history as it captured the essence of teenage love despite societal barriers.

The dialogue in “The Delinquents” may seem dated today but is reflective of its time. The characters’ use of slang words like “swell” and “cool” evoked a sense of nostalgia for viewers who grew up during the 1950s era.

Critics argued that “The Delinquents” lacked depth in terms of its storyline but it effectively conveyed adolescent romance without resorting to cheap cliches or sensationalism.

Overall, “The Delinquents” is a timeless classic that remains relevant today due to its portrayal of universal themes such as love, poverty, social class conflicts with expert acting by Kylie Minogue & Charlie Schlatter combined with beautiful cinematography and nostalgic music-making it a must-watch.
