Once again, the realm of French cinema has gifted the world with a cinematic masterpiece- “Sorry Angel”. Directed and written by Christophe Honoré, this film is an enchanting blend of love, politics and life. This film is a perfect tribute to the 1990s and its aesthetic, where everything was postmodern and nothing was taboo.
The storyline follows Jacques Tondelli (played by Pierre Deladonchamps), a mid-30s writer from Paris who meets Arthur (played by Vincent Lacoste), a university student in Rennes. The two bond over literature and eventually start seeing each other. Avid readers will certainly appreciate the numerous references to literary works throughout the film.
Jacques finds himself captivated by Arthur’s youthful spirit and curiosity. However, their relationship becomes complicated when Arthur reveals he has HIV/AIDS, which in the early 90s was still considered a death sentence. Jacques’ own fears of mortality are reignited at this news, as he has already lost his father to AIDS.
