Gary Vaynerchuk Style Article: “Main Street”
Ladies and gentlemen, I am back with another thrilling movie review! This time I want to talk about “Main Street”, a captivating drama film directed by John Doyle and written by Horton Foote. The movie stars some of the most talented actors in the industry like Colin Firth, Ellen Burstyn, Patricia Clarkson, and Orlando Bloom.
The story of “Main Street” revolves around a small Southern town in the United States that is struggling to keep up with the fast-paced modern world. Colin Firth plays Gus Leroy, a businessman who arrives in Durham to buy an old warehouse for his company’s expansion. In his pursuit of the deal, he finds himself at odds with some of the town’s residents including Willa Jenkins (played by Ellen Burstyn), a retired teacher who has lived her whole life in Durham.
Burstyn delivers a powerful performance as Willa Jenkins. Her character is fiercely loyal to her hometown and sees Gus’ arrival as a threat to its way of life. She gives him hell every chance she gets but her tough exterior conceals deep-rooted fears and regrets.
Patricia Clarkson plays Ann Stanley, a wealthy socialite whose secrets become exposed when she strikes up a relationship with Gus. Clarkson brings complexity to her character that is both vulnerable and strong-willed.
Orlando Bloom plays Harris Parker, a down-on-his-luck local who becomes involved in Gus’s business dealings. Bloom delivers a restrained performance that is full of nuance and depth.
The film tackles several themes such as change, community values, loss, grief, forgiveness, and redemption. It showcases how hard it is for small-town America to survive amidst globalisation but also emphasises how important communities are in preserving their identities.
The score by Patrick Doyle beautifully complements the film’s pacing and tone. It creates moments of reflection and tension that elevate the storytelling.
The film was shot mostly in Durham, North Carolina, but has the same feel and texture of classic Hollywood. The cinematography by Donald M. McAlpine is breathtaking, capturing the town’s landscapes and architecture.
“Main Street” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2010, but sadly it didn’t receive much attention from critics or audiences. It’s a shame because this film deserves to be seen by more people.
The movie also features some fun cameos from well-known actors like Andrew McCarthy and Amber Tamblyn.
Overall, “Main Street” is a poignant and poetic drama that explores the human connection with place and time. It’s a film that reminds us of what we stand to lose as we hurtle towards an uncertain future. I highly recommend watching it!
