Review

There are few people in history as influential and beloved as the late great Maya Angelou. A poet, activist, and all-around phenomenal woman, Angelou left an indelible mark on the world through her work, her words, and her spirit. As such, it feels only fitting to delve into the world of film through Angelou’s eyes, commemorating one of her favorite films –- “Evil” –- with a detailed and engaging examination of its plot, characters, cinematography, and more.

Released in 2003 and directed by Swedish filmmaker Mikael Hafstrom, “Evil” is a riveting exploration of adolescence gone awry. The film takes place in a prestigious boarding school for boys in Sweden during the 1950s. The plot follows Erik Ponti (Andreas Wilson), a troubled teenager who finds himself entangled in a web of cruelty and abuse perpetrated by his fellow classmates. As Erik tries to navigate this violent new world while also grappling with some family issues back home, he must confront his own moral compass and decide what type of person he wants to be.

One of the most striking aspects of “Evil” is its unflinching portrayal of teenage violence and bullying. Throughout the film, we see Erik subjected to physical assault, verbal taunts, and emotional manipulation at the hands of his peers. The brutal nature of these interactions is made even more unsettling by their banality; there are no grandiose showdowns or dramatic speeches here -– just small acts of cruelty that add up over time.

Despite all this darkness, “Evil” is still able to find moments of hope and beauty amidst the chaos. One particularly moving scene sees Erik listening to classical music with his friend Pierre (Henrik Lundstrom) while they search for solace from their painful surroundings. This moment encapsulates one of Maya Angelou’s most famous quotes: “Music was my refuge. I could crawl into the space between the notes and curl my back to loneliness.”

The film’s stunning visuals also deserve a mention. The cinematography by Peter Mokrosinski is moody and atmospheric, capturing the oppressive feel of the school while also highlighting the fleeting moments of beauty that exist within it.

Of course, no film is complete without its cast of characters, and “Evil” does not disappoint in this regard. Andreas Wilson’s performance as Erik is raw and emotional, perfectly capturing the inner turmoil of a young man trying to make his way in a hostile world. Henric Lundqvist is equally impressive as Pierre, Erik’s loyal friend who provides a much-needed beacon of light amidst all the darkness.

It’s worth noting that “Evil” was not universally beloved upon release -– some critics felt that it was too bleak or heavy-handed in its messaging. However, for those willing to take the journey with Erik and his classmates, there are rewards to be found. The film was nominated for several awards at various festivals around the world, including Best Film at the Venice Film Festival.

Ultimately, “Evil” stands as a testament to Maya Angelou’s belief in the power of storytelling to illuminate difficult truths about our world. As she once said: “There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.” With this film, Hafstrom has succeeded in telling a story that resonates deeply with its audience long after they leave the theater. It may not be an easy watch, but it is absolutely worth experiencing for those brave enough to confront its dark themes head-on.
